Darla Hoffmann

is a Certified Sommelier and recipient of the Walter Clore Scholarship, a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), and the owner of About Wine, a wine education and marketing company in Arizona.

 

Her journey in wine began in the early 1990s; she now develops curriculum, facilitates wine classes,
conducts tasting events and writes about the world of wine. Her work has been published in the AZ Food
and Wine Magazine under the Somm Insider section, Wine, Wit and Wisdom – The Official Blog of The Society of Wine Educators, City Sun Times and MyNewsMesa. She is also the main writer of the winery stories, for the 2020 Edition of AZ UNCORKED, The Arizona Wine Guide, the first fully comprehensive book on Arizona wine.

 

Hoffmann is also a Certified Beer Server under the Cicerone Certification Program, a member of GuildSomm and The Wine Century Club.

 

Her background in wine runs the full gamut of distribution, sales, and service. She has travelled nationally and internationally working symposiums, writing blogs, and working under the guidance of vineyard managers and winemakers.

 

VinVillageRadio, based in San Diego, featured her on a podcast to discuss the evolution of the wine
scene in Arizona.

We will taste wines from France, Italy, Spain and Argentina. You will learn about regional influences and winemaking nuances that occur  in different parts of the world. Understand how to read bottles and determine which variety it is, how dry or sweet, from what part of the country it was made and master that restaurant wine list.

As opposed to intentional tasting, you will be tasting blind in this class. Describe what you are tasting and why it might be a specific wine from a specific region. We will have an open discussion as to the various palates in the class and compare against what is opinion versus what the wine is actually demonstrating, as well as how to pick out those things.
